JUUL LABS LAUNCHES NEW RICH TOBACCO FLAVOUR

Juul Labs, the UK’s best-selling vape brand1, has added a new tobacco flavour to its JUULpods range in order to offer adult smokers a wider range of alternatives to combustible cigarettes.

Rich Tobacco JUULpods deliver the rich flavour of Virginia tobacco with earthy notes and a smooth finish and has been available in 18mg/ml nicotine strength from JUUL.co.uk and selected retail partners from the beginning of August. This is the latest addition to Juul Labs’ UK portfolio of flavours, which includes Glacier Mint, Menthol, Mango Nectar, Golden Tobacco and Alpine Berry.

The new flavour is the first launched in newly updated JUULpods branding, featuring redesigned packaging and graphics, which will be rolled out across the JUULpods range over the coming months.

Dan Thomson, Managing Director, Juul Labs UK said: “Juul Labs’ focus is to provide adult smokers with an alternative to combustible cigarettes, and combating underage use of our products. Smoking related diseases are responsible for almost 96,000 deaths in the UK annually2 and smokers should first and foremost try and give up combustible cigarettes entirely – those who have not successfully quit should completely switch to potentially less harmful alternative nicotine products.”

In the UK, Virginia tobacco blends account for over 90% of factory-made cigarettes sold.3 Although annual UK smoking prevalence rates continue to decline, dropping from 14.7% to 14.1% of the adult population, Thomson noted there are still 6.9 million smokers2 nationally and said the introduction of further alternatives may offer adult smokers more options to transition away from combustible cigarettes.

Thomson continued: “We welcome the continued decline of UK smoking rates. Juul Labs and the vaping category exist to help end the era of combustible cigarettes. As smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death around the world4 – and responsible for one death every six minutes in the UK2 – this goal is critical, and vaping products can play a pivotal role in achieving it.“

Juul Labs remains committed to working cooperatively with regulators, public health officials, and other stakeholders to appropriately introduce new products that meet the needs and preferences of a broad range of adult smokers, while limiting appeal to underage individuals.

Rich Tobacco JUULpods are now available across all retail channels and the JUUL.co.uk website with a 4 pack on sale at a RRP of £10.99 with monthly subscribers to JUUL.co.uk receiving a 15% discount on all JUULpods and free shipping.

JUUL LABS SUBMITS PREMARKET TOBACCO PRODUCT APPLICATION TO THE U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION FOR THE JUUL SYSTEM

Juul Labs today announced that it has submitted a Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the company’s JUUL System — an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) product. The company’s submission includes comprehensive scientific evidence for the JUUL Device and JUULpods in Virginia Tobacco and Menthol flavors at nicotine concentrations of 5.0% and 3.0%, as well as information on its data-driven measures to address underage use of its products.

With its PMTA submission, Juul Labs has provided a scientific foundation for the FDA to evaluate whether these products are “appropriate for the protection of the public health” with respect to the risks and benefits to the population as a whole. The application includes detailed scientific data from over 110 studies totaling over 125,000 pages evaluating the product’s impact on both current users of tobacco products and nonusers, including those who are underage.

As part of the PMTA process, Juul Labs has built a comprehensive research program focused on examining the public health impact of the JUUL System. This includes research addressing the harm reduction potential of the product. This research is supplemented with information on the controlled design and repeatable manufacturing processes associated with the JUUL System, as well as data-driven measures to limit unintended consequences to the overall population, including initiation among nonusers.

“In order to earn a license to operate in society, we need to be a science and evidence-based company, engage in open and transparent dialogue with our stakeholders, and take methodical and responsible actions to advance the potential for harm reduction for adult smokers while combating underage use. Our PMTA submission is a key part of that approach,” said Juul Labs CEO K.C. Crosthwaite.

“Juul Labs has committed all necessary resources to deliver the best possible PMTA based on rigorous scientific research and data-driven measures to address underage use,” said Joe Murillo, Chief Regulatory Officer at Juul Labs. “We respect the PMTA process and believe it is the right forum to

determine the role ENDS products can play in transitioning and completely switching adult smokers from combustible cigarettes to potentially less harmful alternative products while combating underage use.”

Late last year, the company, under Crosthwaite’s leadership, committed to resetting the vapor category and seeking to work cooperatively with regulators, legislators, attorneys general, public health officials, and other stakeholders to combat underage use and transition adult smokers from combustible cigarettes. As part of that process, the company reduced its product portfolio, halted television, print, and digital product advertising, built up its science and evidence-based capabilities, and supported the U.S. Administration’s final flavor policy for ENDS products, while taking a methodical approach to its global presence.

Juul Labs has built up its science and evidence-based capabilities and will use its research and data to explore additional pathways in other countries. The company will continue to share its research with regulators and the public health community globally through peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and one-on-one meetings.

JUUL LABS LAUNCHES NEW MENTHOL FLAVOUR IN UK

JUUL Labs has launched a new Menthol flavour JUULpod, to offer adult smokers in the UK a wider range of alternatives to combustible cigarettes.

Menthol JUULpods have gone on sale in approved retailers and on the JUUL.co.uk website. The latest addition to JUUL Labs’ UK portfolio of flavours, which includes Glacier Mint, Mango Nectar, Golden Tobacco and Alpine Berry.

John Patterson, JUUL Labs UK Sales Director said: “JUUL Labs’ focus is to provide adult smokers with an alternative to combustible cigarettes, and combating underage use of our products.

“Smoking related diseases are responsible for almost 96,000 deaths in the UK annually1 . Smokers should first and foremost try and give up combustible cigarettes – but if they can’t or won’t, it is critically important to provide access to potentially less harmful nicotine products.”

It is estimated that a quarter of UK adult smokers - roughly 1.7 million people – currently smoke menthol or crushball cigarettes. Menthol cigarettes will be banned in the EU and UK from 20th May and Patterson added that, for adult smokers who cannot or will not cease using nicotine, having access to alternatives to combustible cigarettes and accurate information about those alternatives is critical.

“With electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), adult smokers have a choice of flavours and a range of alternative options that may help them transition away from combustible cigarettes. Indeed JUUL Labs and the ENDS category exist to help end the era of combustible cigarettes.

“As smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death around the world, this goal is critical, and ENDS can play a pivotal role in achieving it. To be clear, the best choice any person can make is to refrain from consuming any nicotine product.”

JUUL Labs remains committed to working cooperatively with regulators, public health officials, and other stakeholders to appropriately introduce new products that meet the needs and preferences of a broad range of adult smokers, while limiting appeal to underage individuals.

As part of JUUL Labs’ commitment to responsible retailing, the company is continuing to invest in its ‘Challenge 25’ age verification policy, providing retailer training, alongside mystery shopping audits.

Menthol JUULpods are on sale now with a 4 pack on sale at a RRP of £10.99.

JUUL NOW IN MORE NATIONAL STORES

JUUL Labs has confirmed that its products are now available in major national distribution within the multiple grocery channel. Tesco will join Sainsbury’s, ASDA and Morrisons as stockists for the brand as it continues to disrupt the tobacco category and provide a credible alternative to tobacco for adult smokers.

This landmark has been achieved in little over a year after launching into the channel in November last year with the brand already establishing a leadership position in the UK’s closed pod sector(1).

John Patterson, Sales Director of JUUL Labs UK comments: “The multiple channel accounts for around half of all tobacco sales in the UK and gaining listings in these accounts, in addition to convenience retail, was a major objective for the company this year to ensure our products are accessible to adult smokers. At JUUL Labs, we operate a mandatory Challenge 25 policy for all retailers so it’s not just about getting product on-shelf but working together to ensure we make the category work for our partners, bring adult smokers into the vaping category and prevent youth access to vaping products. Given our strict policies, we are delighted to have secured listings across all the main grocery retailers in little over a year.”

The vaping category in the UK continues to post significant growth with over 30% increase in sales with both open and closed systems enjoying growth over the past year. Closed pod systems are however driving over 80% of this(2).

Patterson concludes: “The multiple retailers have really got behind the trends in vaping focusing on the simpler and more convenient closed pod sector and, as such, sales of closed pod systems now outperform open systems in their stores. We are working with each retailer on bespoke plans to signpost the vaping category in their stores with the ultimate aim of switching adult smokers into a category which is widely acknowledged by Public Health England2 , NHS Scotland(3) and the Royal College of Physicians(4) as less harmful than smoking and strive towards our mission of impacting the lives of adult smokers and ultimately eliminating cigarettes.”

ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY, UK SMOKERS CONFUSED ABOUT THE RISKS OF SMOKING VERSUS THE POTENTIAL OF VAPING AS A HARM REDUCTION ALTERNATIVE

JUUL Labs has called for more to be done to educate smokers of the dangers of combustible cigarettes.

The company whose mission is to impact the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers, has released new findings that show UK smokers are still misinformed about the health risks associated with smoking.

Dan Thomson, UK Managing Director for JUUL Labs commented: “Smoking kills up to half of those who smoke and is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. Despite multiple studies from leading health authorities asserting that vaping is less harmful than smoking, the public remains unaware. This is a public health crisis – more must be done to ensure smokers can make an informed decision about vaping and any other methods which could help them switch away from combustible cigarettes”.

The research showed that concerning misconceptions still exist around various components of cigarettes and vaping products, most especially about nicotine.

The components associated with the harm, death and disability of cigarette smoking are linked to the tobacco and ultimately to the c7,000 toxins, including key carcinogens, that are released during its combustion[2]. Nonetheless, 50% of smokers still wrongly believe that “nicotine causes cancer”[1]. Paradoxically, 60% claim to fully understand the health risks associated with smoking yet continue to smoke nonetheless.

The majority of smokers also remain in the dark on the potential benefits of switching to vaping with two-thirds (64%) unaware that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking – the assertion of Public Health England[3], part of the UK Department of Health and Social care, following a landmark review of the scientific evidence.

Recent evidence from scientific studies also showed that when quitting, a standard e-cigarette was twice as effective at helping smokers to quit – as opposed to using a combination of other nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) (18% vs 10%)[4]

John Dunne, Founding Director, UKVIA commented: “These findings are yet another reminder that much more needs to be done to help more of the UK’s 7 million smokers switch to a less harmful alternative. It’s surprising to us that up to 40% of smokers still are yet to try vaping and that’s why we are using VApril this year to help smokers learn about how making the switch can be a life changing decision”.

JUUL LABS JOINS THE UK VAPING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION

JUUL Labs has joined the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) to boost drive for higher and consistent standards within the industry.

Since the UKVIA was formed by top vaping brands in 2016, the UKVIA has been at the forefront of spreading the positive public health message about vaping to the UK’s adult smoking population. That’s why the UKVIA is now excited to be joining forces with key industry player, JUUL Labs, to continue this shared mission.

The key to helping more smokers switch to products which are likely to be far less harmful is ensuring 1 that the vaping industry adheres to the highest standards of product quality, marketing practices and retail operations so that consumers and regulators know they can place their trust in vaping. To emphasise the UKVIA’s commitment to maintaining and raising standards across the industry, the Association has recently launched a new code of conduct for all members.

The ten-point code of conduct outlines the standards that all UKVIA members apply across their businesses from retail to marketing; this includes requiring retailers to use the Challenge 25 scheme in stores, have robust online age sales verifications and ensure products are only marketed towards adult smokers or vapers.

This clear approach to standards in the vaping industry has been a key driving factor behind JUUL Labs’ decision to join the Association. As one of the world’s most recognised vaping brands, JUUL Labs has the ambition and expertise to make a significant contribution to the UKVIA’s work to advance vaping in the UK.

John Dunne, Director of the UKVIA said: “The UKVIA is a partnership of the leading most respected vaping brands in the UK. We only allow companies to become members if they share our ambition to set high standards for the industry and our aim to help the UK’s seven million adult smokers make a life changing switch to a safer alternative. Our new code of conduct confirms the standards that all of our members follow every day as they work to grow and expand the dynamic vaping industry.”

“That’s why we are delighted that JUUL Labs has decided to join the Association in recognition of our shared aims and values. We are excited to work with them to achieve the ambitious aims of the UKVIA.”

Dan Thomson, Managing Director of JUUL Labs UK commented: “The UKVIA’s new code of conduct was a crucial part of JUUL Labs’ decision to join the Association, including affirming the adoption of Challenge

25 across the Association’s members to restrict youth access – a key policy which we have enforced since our launch in the UK last year. This is alongside a wider program of responsible measures that we have implemented exceeding regulatory or legal requirements, including sanctions for any non-compliant retailers on Challenge 25; two-factor authentication for purchase online; a limited range of adult-focused flavours; marketing which is entirely focused on adult smokers over 30 years; and zero presence on social media.

“JUUL Labs’ mission is to impact the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers and to achieve this we are committed to having an open dialogue with government and stakeholders to promote vaping and its benefits over combustible cigarettes. Greater collaboration across the sector will provide both the wider industry and the UKVIA with a more credible voice to achieve our mission.”
